π€ Generative AI and the PANRE-LA: What You Need to Know

The NCCPA PANRE-LA is an open-book exam. Whether that makes it an βopen-AIβ exam is the question I am asked most often, and the honest answer has more nuance than a yes or a no.
The short version: the rule is not βno artificial intelligence.β The rule is about how much of the question leaves your screen, and about who produces the answer.
You may not use or rely on AI-generated content to answer a question, and you may not put substantial portions of a question into anything. You may use online references while you work β including references whose search happens to be AI-powered β searched with a few discrete keywords.
This article sets out what the NCCPAβs own documents say, why they sound like they disagree, and how to search quickly while staying comfortably inside the rules.
π What the two NCCPA documents actually say
There are two sources, and most of the confusion online comes from people having read only one of them.
1. The PANRE-LA Agreement β the document you sign before you begin β states that you may not use or rely on AI-generated content during an exam session or to respond to the test questions.
2. The NCCPAβs PANRE-LA frequently asked questions answer the question βmay I use online resources that incorporate AI?β with yes β provided substantial portions of the question are not used in the search. The same source states that discrete key words from a test question may be used when seeking information through a search engine.
π Read them yourself: the PANRE-LA Agreement, and the PANRE-LA section of the NCCPAβs own frequently asked questions. If the wording has been revised since this article was written, the NCCPAβs documents govern, not this page.
π« What is prohibited
β Using or relying on AI-generated content to answer a question β from ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Grok, Perplexity, or any other generative tool
β Entering the question, its answer options, or a rationale into any chatbot or tool
β Using substantial portions of a question in a search of any kind
β Discussing or sharing PANRE-LA content online
β Copying, saving, or distributing PANRE-LA questions
β What is permitted
β Using references while you answer. That is what open book means.
β Using a reference or search tool that happens to incorporate AI β the technology inside the tool is not what the rule turns on
β Searching with discrete key words drawn from the question
π― The distinction in one line: a few keywords into a search box is fine. The question, or a large chunk of it, going into anything is not. And an answer produced by a model rather than by you is not, however you arrived at it.
π‘ Why the two documents sound like they contradict each other
They are describing two different acts.
The Agreement prohibits AI-generated content β letting a model produce your answer for you.
The frequently asked questions address AI-enhanced search β looking something up in a reference whose search function happens to use AI.
Read together they are consistent. What is protected is your own clinical judgment and the confidentiality of the exam. Neither of those is threatened when you type three keywords into a reference and read a lesson. Both are threatened when you paste a stem into a chatbot and copy what comes back.
β οΈ Why this is worth getting right
π¨ Generative AI is not a validated medical source. It can be fluent, confident, and wrong β and on a recertification exam you may not know enough about that particular topic to catch it.
π Exam content is confidential. Pasting a question anywhere risks the confidentiality agreement you signed, independently of the AI question. That includes pasting it into a search box β ours as much as anyone elseβs.
βοΈ Violations can result in disciplinary action, up to and including the loss of your certification.
When you are unsure, the safest habit is also the fastest one: two to five clinical keywords, into a reference built for this exam, and you decide the answer.
π How to search fast and stay compliant
Since the exam rewards how quickly you can find the right information, the practical question is not which tools are banned. It is how to set yourself up so you are never tempted to take a shortcut in the first place.
1οΈβ£ Set up your space before you start
π» Two screens if you can β exam on one, your reference on the other. A tablet propped beside your laptop works too.
π Have your reference already open before you start the timer. Do not go hunting for it mid-question.
β±οΈ Use the preview. The PANRE-LA lets you see the content category before the five-minute clock starts. Point your reference at that system first, then begin.
2οΈβ£ Search by system and intent, not by sentence
π― The PANRE-LA Rapid Blueprint Search is built for exactly this: pick the content area, pick what you need (diagnosis, best test, treatment), and enter a handful of clinical keywords.
π Because it is scoped to the blueprint, a short keyword search lands on the right topic β which is precisely why you never need to paste more than a few words.
3οΈβ£ Confirm, then decide for yourself
β PEARLS summaries give you the high-yield diagnostic and treatment points in seconds
β The full lesson is one click underneath if you want the reasoning rather than the conclusion
β You pick the answer. That is the part the rules exist to protect.
π Keyword search versus asking a chatbot
| Searching Smarty PANCE with keywords | Asking a general AI chatbot for the answer | |
|---|---|---|
| Allowed during the PANRE-LA? | β Yes β a permitted online reference | β No β AI-generated answers are prohibited |
| Safe to paste the question into? | β No β never paste exam content anywhere | β No |
| Built from the PANRE-LA blueprint? | β Yes | β No |
| Written and reviewed by a practising PA? | β Yes | β No |
| Speed with 2β5 keywords | π Instant and blueprint-scoped | β οΈ Varies, and unscoped |
π― Bottom line: you are allowed to look things up, and you are allowed to look them up in a tool that is clever about searching. What you are not allowed to do is hand over the question or hand over the judgment.

π Final thoughts
π΄ The rule is about fragment size and about who produces the answer β not about whether a tool has AI inside it. Keep your searches to keywords, keep the question on your screen, and make the call yourself. That is the whole of it.
